Customer had an existing slab with various grades they wanted to be a flat slab.

This job wasn’t something you see everyday. We usually really try and not do overlays of any kind. There is unseeable possible issues with this approach. Possible settling issues under the slab, lack of reinforcement to help mitigate this, and possibly voids under the existing slab. All of which are far less than ideal conditions. After a thorough investigation, we felt the existing slab was more than likely sound enough for this approach, but again, NEVER an ideal way to do this.

The existing slab is very old and the stem walls used to hold an old dairy barn. It had channels in it I assumed were for drains for washing the floor easily. The customer wanted a completed flat slab. The job was close to home but far off the beaten path. Demo and trucking would have been quite expensive so the customers opted for an overlay. It was at a fish hatchery so various streams of funding were used. There were various elements that were donated which helped greatly with overall cost.

Trickiest part of this job went into finishing. The existing slab underneath made it impossible to drive pins for grade. We opted for a slightly unconventional route and were able to get it done. After some teamwork, and thought we ended up with a nice finished floor.
